My husband and I had been waiting since October for a new front door and two back doors to be installed. So when the company called to tell us they could put in our new doors on New Year’s Eve, we were thrilled. When the men arrived on monday morning, we found out only our back doors were on the truck. We would have to schedule our front door for another time.
The day went quickly down hill from there. After some rude comments from the installer and no apology from the office, we’re still waiting for our front door.
Five tips to make the renovation experience more bearable:
- Stay in constant contact. Whether you’re getting new doors installed or an entire kitchen, stay on top of the situation. If items are on back order, find out an exact delivery estimate. If one item is in stock and the other is not, demand to have the merchandise that’s available installed right away.
- Don’t leave workers alone in your house, even if they tell you they are bonded and insured. Schedule a time when a family member will be home. If they won't adjust to your schedule, don’t be afraid speak to the manager.
- Don’t pay until all the work is complete, even if a portion is finished. Unless there is a stipulation in the contract, pay the bill when the work is finished to your satisfaction.
- Pay by credit card, not by check. That way if there are any problems, the credit card company will usually back you up.
- If you’re not happy with any service or the way the work is being done, speak up. Don’t wait until the job is complete to voice your complaints.
Following these suggestions won't make the renovation process any easier, just less stressful.
