Grocery shoppers can find better prices just by searching on the right shelves!

Where a shopper looks is as important as what he/she buys when it comes to navigating the supermarket. Look up and look down, but don't necessarily buy what is eye level at the grocery store.

Where to Find the Lowest Priced Food at the Supermarket:

Manufacturers pay top dollar for the prime spots on grocery store shelves. So the food that is placed at eye level just might be more expensive than brands that are high up or down low. So even if a certain brand is hard to reach, get a store clerk to help, because the savings may well be worth the extra effort.

The front of every aisle is also a gold mine for retailers. But that also may be the place to find good deals as well. Retailers place two-for-one specials and other bargains there in order to draw consumers farther down the aisle.

That's where shoppers will find the freshest food like produce as well as fresh meats and cheeses. The processed food tends to be in the middle of the store, as well as cereal and canned goods.

Check the Perimeter of the Store:

When buying cereal, don't rely on name brands. Store brands are often just as tasty and often cheaper. Also check labels carefully for nutrition information. One brand might appear to be more expensive, but could contain twice as much fiber or protein as another brand. And bigger does not always mean cheaper.

Check the price per ounce instead of simply comparing boxes. And remember, shoppers don't have to buy quantity to get a good deal. Just because the sign says, "Buy 10 cans for $10" doesn't mean that a consumer can't buy only one can for $1. If that doesn't work, one can always return the item at check-out.

Pay Attention to Sales:

Grocery stores often follow a pattern as to when they place items on sale. Generally it's a four to six week rotation. So if chicken is on the menu, wait until sale day to prepare it, and then find a free chicken recipe on the internet. Also, it's a good idea to download the supermarket's weekly sale flyer before ever leaving home. That way, consumers can compare sales with coupons before entering the store. It's a good idea to have a shopping list and a plan, to avoid spending impulsively on items that end up gathering dust on pantry shelves!
