Dollar Store, Dollar Tree, Family Dollar and Dollar General are some of the best known of these discount retailers. The deals can be good, if you know what to look for.
A dollar doesn’t buy what it used to. Or maybe it does, if you pick the right dollar store at the right time with the right coupons in hand! You can’t get a whole lot for under $1 but $20 sure will buy you a lot.
How to Get the Best Deals at Dollar Stores:
Look for promotions online before you head out to the store. If you go to the Family Dollar web site you’ll see a section that lists everything you can buy for under $1 and under $2. For less than a buck, you can purchase 200 count paper napkins, paper plates, cups or cutlery. If you’re having a backyard barbecue on the fourth, this would be the place to hit first. And for those romps to the beach, colorful flip flops are going fast for (you guessed it) $1. The catch? These prices are only good until June 27th. They are clearly loss leaders. So when you head to the store, purchase only what you came for and don’t be tempted to buy the more expensive items on display.
Don’t buy what you don’t need. Sure, blow-up beach balls for $2 looks like a great deal. But if your kid only plays with them for five minutes and tosses them aside, you’ve just wasted two bucks. So spend carefully, even if it’s only a small amount.
Take advantage of rebates. Dollar General lists all the items that offer mail-in rebates on its web site. So be sure to stop there before you head out the door. You can even download the rebate form and receive one check for all the rebates you completed. The items include cereal, toothpaste, cosmetics and camera film. It wouldn’t hurt to sign up for e-mail alerts, so you are aware of the newest promotions before everyone else finds out.
Save on seasonal items. You’ll often find the best deals on barbecue grills and picnic supplies right before the fourth of July holiday. You won’t find a smoker grill for under $1 but at Family Dollar, they are on sale for $27.99.
If you find a deal, stock up; especially on those low-price non-perishable grocery items. Save the flyers that come in the mail and peruse them for the latest deals before you go to the store. It saves time and gas; because if there is nothing on sale that you need, you won’t waste a trip.
