Tired of spending a small fortune at the movies? Think you're wasting too much money on DVD rentals? Some tips on how to save on movie rentals and even get them free!
When Saturday night dinner and a movie costs as much as a car payment, it’s time to think about renting a flick at home instead of standing in line at the movie theater for expensive popcorn and $9 tickets. But even renting DVDs can make a dent in your bottom line.
How to Save Money on Movie Rentals:
Go to McDonald’s. The fast food giant is now offering one-day movie rentals for a dollar at many of its stores. You don’t even have to buy a hamburger. Just insert your money into the self-serve kiosk and go. Mickey D’s may not offer the vast selection of a video store, but many of the newer more popular titles are in stock. You can even find these machines at some grocery stores. The price might be a little higher but you can usually get discounts during the week (especially Mondays.)
Sign up for Blockbuster’s Total Access. The program allows you to choose from more than 80,000 titles online and exchange them by mail or at a store. For $19.99 plus tax per month you can order three DVDs at a time with up to five in-store exchanges. For $16.99 you get two DVDs at a time with three in-store exchanges, and for $11.99 you can order one DVD at a time and trade them in the store twice during the month. If you don’t want to visit the store at all, mail-only programs start from just $3.99 a month.
Get free movie rentals at the library. If you are a classic movie buff, this is the plan for you. But you might be disappointed if you simply must be the first in line to see the latest films. It wouldn’t hurt to experience new genres this way. Say you are a romantic movie fan; sitting down to watch a western once in a while just might broaden your horizons and open your eyes to some of the big screen stars of yesteryear.
Trade movies with friends. If you own every movie in the Star Wars series and your buddy has all of the Back to the Future titles, it might be fun to swap for a few weekends. In fact, make a get-together out of it. Watching movies you’ve seen hundreds of times is more fun when you view them with a bunch of people. Don’t have a big screen TV for your party? Consider renting one.
