In this economy, haircuts, color, manicures and pedicures may be the first to go. But consumers can still go to the salon without breaking the bank.

Sure, people can cut their own hair, color their roots at home and even do a self-manicure/pedicure. But a bad economy doesn't necessarily mean foregoing the salon altogether. Following are some tips to save money at the beauty/barber shop:

Look for Coupons in the Mail:

A lot of times, the way beauty salons attract new customers is to mail out coupons to residents in their area. So pay attention to those money mailers that show up. They tend to come when new people move in to the area. And if residents sign up for anything using a birthdate, salons may buy a mailing list and a coupon will show up the month of that big day! (But it's wise not to give out birthdates to anyone other than trusted sources.)

Shop Around for the Best Deals:

Even if being a loyal client is important, in these economic times, staying afloat is even more crucial. So don't hesitate to leave a salon if another establishment down the street is offering a better deal and the service is just as good, if not better. Simply explain to the hair stylist that salon X is offering a lower price. Sometimes the current salon will match or beat their competition's rates.

Check out Beauty Schools:

If one has an easy haircut, beauty schools may be the way to go. They are extremely affordable most of the time and the students are well coached by more experienced stylists. Before doing any complicated procedure like color, be sure to speak with the manager about the person most suited for the job.

Negotiate a Better Price:

Afraid of leaving a long-time stylist or manicurist but can't afford her rate? Ask the stylist for a discount. If she says yes, great. If she won't agree to a price reduction, it's time to leave. Even if saying goodbye is hard, most people understand times are tough. And consumers have to go where they can get the best service for the lowest rates.

And for people who can't afford salon treatments anymore at all, home color has gotten a lot better. Sephora has begun offering professional colors which are very close to what one would find in a salon. At-home hair cutting guides are available at online book stores. Not sure about cutting and coloring at home? Get a friend to help; each doing the other's hair. In fact, make a party out of it and invite a whole bunch of friends (preferably someone who knows her way around a hair salon!)
