Save Money Buying Generic at the SupermarketSpend Less by Purchasing Store Brands instead of Name Brands
Why buying generic can save more money than one might think.
Teenagers can rattle off brand name after brand name. Marketers have them squarely in their pockets. But by the time they reach adulthood, one would hope they become money-wise and street-smart, foregoing brand names for generic products. Savvy consumers know a name is just a name.... How Buying Store Brands Saves Big Money:Unless there is a huge sale on a certain brand, buying generic can save consumers a lot of money. Often stores put their own labels on sale more often to entice shoppers to buy their own products. By paying particular attention to those products, consumers can almost set their calendars as to when those items will go on sale. And even when they are regularly priced, these products usually sell for much less than their name brand competitors. Download Store Flyers before Heading to the Supermarket:Every week grocery stores publish their sales flyers online and have them on hand in the front of the store. There, they list everything that is on sale for the week, including those all-important store brands. Load up on these products. Even if they are frozen, consider purchasing a small refrigerator at a scratch and dent store and storing it in a pantry or guest closet. That way, shoppers can stock up on frozen items without worrying about space issues. Canned goods are also easy to store in a pantry, a closet or even under a bed! What to do about Picky Eaters who Insist on Store Brands:Lie, lie lie! (No, not really!) A little sneakiness is in order without really being deceptive. Hide the box, or get rid of it altogether, whatever is necessary. But if the picky eater of the family still notices the difference, ‘fess up and admit the deception. But not before convincing this person (usually a child!) that it is extremely important that the family saves money and buying store brands is part of the saving process. Some finicky eaters might find they like store brands even better than name brands! Why some Store Brands are Better than Others:One would think a generic is a generic. But that is not always the case. One grocery store’s high fiber cereal could very well taste much better than another. Compare supermarkets and find which one tastes best. And of course, determine which offers the better price as well. Buying generic can become just as much of a habit as clipping coupons...a habit that could save thousands every year.
