What to look for when renting a purse online. How to know if you are getting a good value, and is "borrowing" a bag online necessarily a better deal than buying?
If you crave the latest designer handbags, but don’t have a Louis or Gucci kind of budget, renting may be a more affordable option. You can change purses every week or month for anywhere from $30 to $300 a bag.
How to Decide Whether You Should Rent or Buy a Purse:
Compare prices. Handbag rental sites are popping up all over the net. Most charge per bag but will offer you a monthly membership fee for around $10 to $15 a month. With that you’ll receive some kind of a discount on your rentals, usually around 10 percent. You might also be privy to the newest purses that come on the market. But before you commit to a membership, rent a few of the less expensive purses to make sure the quality is good before you sign an agreement. And don’t forget about shipping! You may have to foot the bill for one way. Just factor in those charges when you see a purse you like.
Consider how long you wear a handbag. If you carry a purse for only a month before it ends up in the closet gathering dust, renting may be a better option for you. But if you hang on to your bags season after season, purchasing might be more cost effective. A penchant for designer totes can be an expensive addiction, especially if you favor the latest fads. Want to save money? look for purses with a more timeless style.
Don’t discount knock-offs. A copycat handbag may not look exactly like the real thing, but who will know? And you can’t beat the price. Just remember, the quality and craftsmanship may not be the same, and the purse might not last as long as the real thing.
Shop at consignment shops. Don’t want to pay full price for a brand new Gucci bag, but you also refuse to throw money away renting? High end consignment shops often feature designer goods at bargain prices. Sure, there might be some wear and tear, but nothing you wouldn’t accomplish yourself in the first month that you own the bag.
Trade purses with friends. If you know enough people with a closet full of designer totes, get everyone together for a swap session. You’ll have fun and save money. Just make sure you agree ahead of time how long each person keeps a bag, and remember to treat the borrowed purse better than your own!
