They won't replace supermarkets any time soon...but online grocery stores are popular because you can often save more by clicking a mouse instead of pushing a cart.

Service men and women stationed overseas are big fans of online grocery stores. Their friends and family can send care packages with the touch of a button. Even civilians in the U.S. who live less than two miles from a supermarket are choosing to shop online instead. Why? You can find some great deals on the web:

  • Amazon This giant web retailer is fairly new to the online grocery business. That’s why you can find bargains here that you won’t find at your local food chain. When you get to the grocery section, don’t let the more than 20,000 items intimidate you. Just scan to the upper right-hand corner of the page where you’ll find Sales and Special Offers. Here you’ll choose from savings of up to 70 percent and some great rebates as well. For instance, one offer gives you a $15 instant rebate when you spend $39 or more on select Frito-Lay brand snacks. Just make sure you have enough room in your pantry before you hit "place order." You’ll also find deals on more than just groceries. The discounts include everything from gourmet canned seafood to cocktail mixers and over-the-counter allergy medicine. What you won’t find, however, are perishable items.
  • Groceries-Express This is where you can buy frozen and refrigerated foods. But unlike Amazon, which offers free shipping if you spend more than $25, Groceries-Express asks you for your zip code before you even enter the site. Once you plug in those five digits, you can calculate shipping charges and even get some special offers for your area.
  • Netgrocer Here you can order all the frozen and perishable items you want. But they require a $35 minimum and shipping is extra, depending on where you live. But before you load up on Mrs. Paul’s Calamari Rings for $7.69, remember the delivery truck has a frozen food compartment, but most likely your front porch doesn’t. So if you’re not home to take the delivery, you’re better off buying frozen food at the corner market.

One thing none of these online grocers will do is deliver to a post office box. But they all deliver to APO an FPO addresses, so service men and women can continue receiving those care packages.
