In 2006, the International House of Pancakes (IHOP) began a tradition of giving away free pancakes one day per year in exchange for a potential donation to charity. On Tuesday, February 24, 2009, the restaurant chain will hold its annual pancake giveaway from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

According to the IHOP Pancake Day website, customers may receive one short stack of three buttermilk pancakes. The stack is free of charge, but IHOP hopes customers will give money to charity in return.

IHOP Giving Away Free Pancakes to Raise Money for Charity

According to the Children’s Miracle Network website, “IHOP guests are asked to donate what they would have paid for the free pancakes, or more, to their local children’s hospital or another worthy cause.” The Children’s Miracle Network fundraising goal on this day is $1 million. Restaurant patrons can donate directly to this charity by purchasing Miracle Balloons at each IHOP location.

IHOP National Pancake Day 2009: What is the Children’s Miracle Network?

The Children’s Miracle network is a non-profit organization, founded in 1983, to raise money to benefit 170 hospitals equipped to give specialized care to children. The hospitals in the alliance are located in the United States and Canada, and the Children’s Miracle Network is headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The organization raises money through corporate sponsors as well as televised events, radiothons, dance marathons, and promotions like IHOP’s National Pancake Day.

Why Should IHOP Patrons Consider Giving Money to the Children’s Miracle Network?

Money raised by the network is used to fund research, education, equipment purchases, and treatment for childhood injury and diseases. Some funds given to the children hospitals by the Children’s Miracle Network is used to provide charity care and treatments to children in local communities across the U.S. and Canada, and a good portion of these funds are raised $1 at a time through donations at business locations like IHOP.

Can IHOP raise $1 million for the Children’s Miracle Network? According to the Children’s Miracle Network website, IHOP raised over $875,000 for charity last year. Considering the impact of word of mouth advertising and the promotion of a specific goal of $1 million, the odds look good that the goal can be attained.
