Statistics say an identity theft occurs every three seconds. To avoid being victims, people have several options to protect themselves from identity thieves.

Identity theft is becoming a bigger and bigger problem today, because technology is making it easier to buy, sell, or simply steal information such as names, addresses, and social security numbers. Anyone who has been the victim of identity theft knows how difficult it can be to restore a good name and credit rating.

Some companies are very willing to work with victims of identity fraud, and others are not. Additionally, some states have laws making this kind of theft a crime, but that's not the case for every state within the US. If a person's thinking about identity theft protection services, which one to use and whether it's really needed at all are both worth considering.

Lower Risk With Identity Theft Protection Software

There's no way to completely stop ID theft, but there are ways to minimize the risk from it. A lot of people choose to address that risk themselves, and they focus on various types of software they can get online. Often, these are free. Some of them work to stop ID theft better than others do, and some really don't work at all. It's best to research several of these options online to find the best one that works for a particular situation.

When choosing identity protection software, it's generally better to go with more proven companies that offer identity protection. These should include companies that provide anti-spam, anti-spy, and anti-virus software, and that offer regular updates for these products. Buying software for identity protection isn't very helpful if it's frequently out-of-date and there aren't any updates for it. Identity protection can't help consumers if the people who are out to steal those consumers' information can simply get around the safeguards that are put in place.

Paying for Identity Protection Services

In addition to the companies offering identity theft software that consumers can use on their own, there are companies such as LifeLock that offer complete identity protection services. These kinds of companies work by ordering fraud alerts on credit reports, stopping unwanted junk mail and unsolicited offers of credit from being sent to customers, and notifying those customers if credit has been opened or is about to be opened in their names.

Many of these identity protection services also offer guarantees. If their protection doesn't work the way it's intended to, they will pay for identity theft lawyers to help a customer restore his name and credit rating. Some guarantees offer financial assistance limits as high as one million dollars.

No matter which option consumers choose, or whether they have more than one type of identity theft protection service, protecting their information is vital in a technological age where there is less privacy and more ways for people to be deceptive. Stealing information isn't new, but with more ways to do it, protecting people from identity theft is becoming big business and a serious priority, with more and more online companies and resources springing up.
