Most people love to travel, but will admit that they are often limited by their budgets. These tips will help travelers enjoy their trips without emptying their wallets.
Everyone deserves a vacation, but most are deterred by the cost of taking one. However, it is possible to relax and have fun while traveling without breaking the bank. Here's how: Save Money on Travel by Planning Ahead One of the most common mistakes made when vacationing is that travelers underestimate the costs involved in visiting their destinations. Avoid this pitfall by deciding which sites to see and restaurants to visit one to two weeks in advance. Create a detailed cost assessment of these items and decide which options are feasible and which are not. Contact restaurants, museums, and tourist attractions in advance to see if there are any discounts for visiting during certain times or on certain days of the week. Ask if there are discounts on tickets purchased in advance. Inquire about coupons, happy hours, group rates, and rebates that may decrease the cost of seeing the local sites. The cost of travel can be dramatically decreased by participating in frequent flier, hotel and other membership programs. Get a jump start on the cost of next year's vacation by joining a frequent flier or frequent hotel guest's discount program during this trip. Travel lovers will also find it helpful to start a savings account for future travel expenses. $50 per month over the course of one year will add up to an attractive fund of $600 that can be used next year on another relaxing vacation. Save Money on Transportation While TravelingMany travelers who have driven to major cities such as New York City, Los Angeles, and Washington D.C. have reported that the costs involved in parking or storing their vehicles during their vacations were much higher than airfare would have been. Determine in advance if the cost of gasoline, parking, storage, and car rental will exceed the cost of a plane ticket purchased through Expedia or Travelocity. It may be worthwhile to fly and use public transportation or taxis upon arrival. (Also, keep in mind that Expedia and Travelocity offer discounts on flight and hotel packages). Save Money on Meals and Incidentals While Traveling Eating out at restaurants can become very expensive quite quickly. The costs involved in eating while on vacation can be cut significantly by choosing a hotel with free, hot breakfasts. Pack a small lunch to eat in a scenic spot during the afternoon. Then finish the day at a great restaurant with a satisfying meal. No travel budget is complete without an allowance for souvenirs and nightlife enjoyment. Plan for additional incidentals by deciding in advance how much will be spent on these items. While these steps may take time and patience, they are worthwhile and have been used for years by average people who love to travel but prefer to watch their pennies. Incorporating these suggestions can help to make any vacation an affordable and memorable experience.
