A bad credit score does not have to remain bad. There are many techniques that can be used to improve a credit report and score that don't require external help.

Good credit is important in today's society. The benefits associated with a good credit score are numerous. It allows for the purchase of a home or car with a low interest rate, credit cards with high limits and low APR's and other perks.

A bad credit report doesn't have to be bad forever. Follow these tips to learn the secrets to getting a higher credit score.

Timely Payments are Important to a Credit Score

Pay bills on time every month and always make at least the minimum payment due (or a greater amount if possible). If a payment is missed, a credit score suffers. Creditors are willing to help if they are contacted by a customer that is running into difficulty. Creditors will usually lower an APR or set up a payment arrangement with a customer if they are unable to pay. However, if late payments have already been made a customer should simply begin to make payments on time again and the credit report will start to rebound.

Keep Balances Low

Don’t open new accounts in order to transfer an existing balances too often. Credit card companies look at reports frequently; and if a trend is noticed, they may flag that customer as a potential risk. This can lead to an account being closed or the credit line being lowered. Balances on credit cards should always sit at less than 50 percent of the total credit line; the closer the balance is to the range of 1 to 9 percent of the credit line, the higher the score will go.

Credit Rating Tips Include Monitoring Average Age of Accounts

Don’t open new credit cards just to increase the amount of available credit. New accounts hurt the average age of the accounts on a credit report, and length of time helps a score. By the same token, don’t close unused credit cards to improve a credit report; these accounts, if they're in good standing, are actually helping a score with the credit available and length of time they have been open.

Don't Acquire Too Much New Credit

Do homework for all home and car loans before the applications. Apply for these types of loans all within a short period of time; as all the inquiries will count as one rather than multiple inquires. This is helpful because a credit score will lose points if there are too many new inquiries. Also, people who are rebounding from a bad credit report shouldn't be afraid to open new accounts. They are important because these new credit lines will show and reflect on a credit report that credit is now being used and managed wisely.

Diversify Types of Credit to Get Higher Scores

It's best to have a mix of credit, meaning more than just credit cards or a mortgage. Open different types of credit accounts, like student loans, store cards, credit cards, auto loans, and mortgages; these will show that a person can manage different types of credit and this will be reflected in the extra points received in the credit score. Note that just because an account is close, it doesn’t just drop off the report. Closed accounts generally remain on credit reports for ten years and still count towards the credit score.
