Is Vitamin D the new super nutrient? Experts do say most Americans need more of it. You can consume more easily and inexpensively.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recently doubled the recommended dose of Vitamin D for children. They say most kids and adults don’t get enough of this essential nutrient in their diet alone. And although sunlight is the best source of Vitamin D, too much can raise the risk of skin cancer. But you can find cheap foods loaded with Vitamin D.

Inexpensive Ways to Get More Vitamin D in Your Diet

  • Salmon is an all-around healthy fish. It is chock full of Vitamin D and Omega 3’s. It’s also surprisingly inexpensive if you know where to look. Many Sam’s Clubs throughout the country carry frozen blackened salmon. It keeps for a long time and is easy to prepare...Simply sauté on your stove top. Even kids like the spicy taste. Lox and cream cheese on a bagel is also a great way to get your Vitamin D. Smoked salmon slices can be expensive, but you’ll save money if you buy the lox pieces instead of the strips. Other oily fish like mackerel and canned sardines are also good sources.
  • Vitamin D fortified milk is an inexpensive way to get this nutrient. But it may not be enough, especially if the adults and children in your family don’t drink at least four glasses a day. Other dairy foods like cheese are not fortified. So if you are relying on milk as your sole source of Vitamin D, you’ll need to look at other ways to take it in.
  • Sunlight is the cheapest source of Vitamin D because it is free! But dermatologists warn that this is not an excuse to bake in the sun. All you need is about 15 minutes a day, but if you live in a northern climate, that won’t do it in the winter months.
  • Multi-vitamins are an inexpensive way to get Vitamin D and other essential nutrients. But that doesn’t mean you should avoid eating healthy foods. And you don’t have to buy expensive vitamins. The cheapest generic vitamins at the supermarket are just as effective as pricey ones. Just make sure you look for Vitamin D on the list of ingredients. And many physicians also recommend a Vitamin D3 supplement that you can find at most supermarkets and drug stores.

How Much Vitamin D do Most People Need?

According the Mayo Clinic, adults should take in 800 to 1,000 international units per day. One study suggests Vitamin D may help protect against type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis. And may reduce the risk of certain cancers.
