Tired of mowing the grass yourself? How to find a cheap but effective lawn care company. Paying a lot of money doesn't necessarily mean good service.

If you’d rather kick back with a tall beer than wrestle with an unwielding power mower all summer long, you might want to hire a lawn service. They are not just for the wealthy anymore.

In fact you’ve probably seen them in your community; crews of several people mowing lawns back to back in a matter of minutes. But sometimes the kid down the street will do a better job and give you a cheaper price.

How to Choose the Best Lawn Care Service for the Money:

  • Interview applicants ahead of time. You would never think about hiring a contractor or a house cleaning company without a prior interview. So treat a lawn service the same way. It doesn’t matter if you hire Johnny, the 16 year old kid down the street, or a professional lawn care company. You should sit down with an applicant and ask questions. For instance, how often will your lawn be mowed and does this person or company charge a flat fee for the entire season? If they charge for each visit, your lawn may receive more attention than you really want. If you’d rather see your grass cut every two weeks instead of once a week, let them know ahead of time. Also find out what happens to the grass clippings. Are they mulched and used as fertilizer for your yard? Does the service include fertilizing in the spring and fall? Is leaf removal included? Take a look at other lawns the service takes care of and make sure the edging and finishing touches are what you would expect.
  • Ask for a guarantee. If you are not satisfied with the job will they come back and fix it? If you are required to sign a contract, read the fine print. Make sure there is a clause to get out of the deal, if all of a sudden you decide to start mowing yourself in the middle of the summer, or you’re just not happy with the work.
  • Talk to your neighbors about asking for a group discount. If the lawn care company is already servicing three of your neighbors and they refer this company to you, ask if all of the residents on the street can receive a discount. Professional mowers can save a lot of gas by knocking out several homes on the same street.

Finally, now that the lawn care is in someone else’s hands, you can start spending more time with your family.
