Buying a New Bra--When is it Time to Get Fitted?

Why Getting Measured for a Bra Will Save Money in the Long Run

Jan 12, 2009 L. Marie Dubuque

If your idea of bra shopping is running into a discount store and picking up the same size you bought last time, you should reconsider your selection. It could save $$.

The idea of undressing in front of a sales woman is about as appealing as a visit to the dentist. But getting measured by a professional will not only save you money, it will make your clothes look better, and help you feel more comfortable during the day. The last think you want to be doing is tugging at a mis-fitting strap or pulling down a cup that is too big or too small.

Where You Should Go to Get Fitted for a Bra

  • If there is a custom bra shop in your community, go there first. These ladies know how to fit bras. They help people who have special needs when it comes to bra sizes and shapes. The store will also have a much larger selection than a regular department store. If these stores don't exist in your area, try Nordstrom or Neiman Marcus. High end retailers are more customer-service oriented. So the sales people in lingerie are trained well, and should know what they are doing. Try to hit the store when it first opens, so you aren't vying for their attention among 20 other shoppers. Also, check for bra sales and events. Buy one/get one free promotions are common during these economic times.
  • Tell the sales person about your lifestyle and concerns. If you are worried about sagging, or are large-breasted, you might need an under wire. But if you spend most of your time in the gym, a sports bra might be for you. If you are looking for a more ample cleavage, an experienced bra fitter might be able to share a few tricks of the trade! Also if you have a dress that criss-crosses in the back or a strapless evening gown, a knowledgeable sales person will know the perfect bra to enhance any special occasion. Don't forget to bring your evening gown along with you to get fitted, so you won't be surprised on the big night.

When Should You Get Fitted for a Bra?

  • Whenever you gain or lose 10 pounds.
  • You've just had a baby.
  • At least every two or three years, even if your weight has not fluctuated.

Remember to follow laundering instructions carefully. Accidentally putting a bra in the dryer, or stretching it with another piece of clothing in the washing machine will shorten its life. A well fitting bra will make you feel more confident by making you look your best, and help your bottom line: You're likely to hold on to it longer if it makes you look good.
