Make your car into a rolling billboard, and you'll make some money on the side.

If you’re driving anyway, why not hawk products and get free gas in return. Gasforfree.com will fill your tank, as long as you meet their requirements:

  • Your car must be 10 years old or less.
  • You should drive an average of 1250 miles per month.
  • You need to be the registered owner of your car.
  • You can provide a valid driver’s license, valid insurance and a clean driving record.

They say they might make an exception for an older, classic car. And if you drive around in a congested city, that 1250 mile rule might be forgiven.

If You Decide you Don’t Want Your Car to Become a Rolling Billboard, You Can Save Gas in other Ways:

  • Join a carpool. Check bulletin boards at your office, talk it up with the neighbors, and check out classified ads online and in your local newspaper (but be sure to do a background check before driving with a stranger.)
  • Check out public transportation. Even small towns offer a bus service. People who are reluctant to embark on mass transit are often surprised at how easy and relaxing it is, once you get started.
  • Downsize your car. Depending on how old your car is, how much you can sell it for, and what kind of a deal you can find on a smaller car, downsizing may be an option.
  • Open a credit card that pays you back in free gas. But make sure you pay your entire balance at the end of the month. Otherwise, you’ll be spending more on interest that you’ll save in gas.
  • Walk and ride your bike. Even if you live in the far-flung suburbs, or on a dirt road in the middle of nowhere, you might be able to walk at least part of the way to work, and take public transportation or share a ride for the rest of the route. Some busses and trains will allow bicycles, as long as they have a special storage compartment.

If you are considering featuring advertisements on your car, keep in mind you can reject a company that you don’t like. But once you do that twice, you’re out of the program. And Gas For Free claims the "car wraps" they put on your car will not damage the paint. Will the gas card you get in exchange make the idea seem more palpable? If prices at the pump keep going up, the company may soon have more drivers than advertisers.
