If you are looking at a very frugal holiday season, you can still find the perfect gift without spending a lot...And the recipient will never guess!
Diamonds or dime store? Tiffany’s or TJ Maxx? You don’t have to go to these extremes this holiday season. But you can buy gifts that look expensive...and only you know what you actually spent!
How to Find Cheap Gifts that Look Expensive:
Buy lesser known designer jewelry. You’ve heard of Gucci and Rolex. Even David Yurman might ring a bell. But you probably have never heard of Lori Bonn or Lois Hill. Up-and-coming designers not only create some of the most unique designs, but their pieces are usually a lot less expensive than their more well known counterparts. And don’t think you have to shop at fancy shops and pay high prices to get quality gems. Target has an extensive jewelry department with some nice pieces.
Shop online for dishes and small appliances. If you are looking for china for your mother-in-law, forget about department stores. They usually carry a 50% mark-up. Instead look to online stores like Amazon and Overstock. Then search for sale items marked down at least 30%. You’re likely to find great deals on discontinued patterns and styles. Even bread makers and waffle irons are usually better deals online. Before you hit "purchase" do a google search for coupons. And make sure you get free shipping.
Don’t pay full price for clothes! In this economic climate, stores are offering sales well before Black Friday. So, if you are buying someone a sweater this holiday season, make sure you get a big discount. Check the Sunday paper for coupons before you head out to the store. Cashiers often used to try and dig one up for you, but nowadays, forget it. You’ll have to bring your own. And try to get the clothing size right so your recipient will not try and return it! Better yet, think about scarves and hats where one size fits all. They're not very exciting, but eveyone needs them.
Buy perfume that comes with a gift. Some companies are offering free gifts with purchase. If that’s the case take advantage of those deals. Often, you’ll receive a gift worthy of giving to someone else on your list! So it’s like buying two for one.
When all else fails, give gift cards. But try to find ones that will give you a bonus for purchasing them. Some restaurants will give you a coupon for $10 off an entree if you buy a certain number of cards. Just make sure you buy from companies that won’t be going out of business any time soon.
