Buying a gift for that all-important first birthday can be inexpensive and memorable at the same time.

There isn't a one year old anywhere who will remember his or her first birthday gifts. But finding a present that parents can save for the child later on will create wonderful memories. And the gift doesn't have to be expensive.

How to Find an Inexpensive Gift for a First Birthday:

Peruse discount stores. That little boy or girl isn't going to care whether his gift comes from Target or Neiman Marcus. But do pay attention to size. A one year old that is big for his age could easily fit into a size 2T. And when buying a larger outfit that the child can grow into, be cognizant of the season. Buying a summer outfit when the baby won't fit into it until winter won't do him any good.

Instead of clothing, accessories like blankets, bibs and bath toys also make great gifts. And parents appreciate them as well. Toddlers especially like bath toys that squeak and blankets that are very soft, This time of year, outdoor toys also make great gifts.

Give a Child a Hand-made Gift for a First Birthday

Nothing is more special than a present one makes by hand. Don't let "not being crafty" get in the way. Peruse craft stores for discounts on easy-to-assemble kits. They are not as hard as they look! Pay attention to sales and do a quick internet coupon search before leaving the house.

Consider a Monogrammed First Birthday Present

They're often not expensive, and easy to personalize. A child may not be able to use a mug with his name on it yet, but it is a gift he will associate with the gift giver for many years to come. Orient Expressed offers a personalized baby bowl with birth date, weight and length for $30.

Offer to Babysit for the Parents of a One Year Old

This may not seem like a gift one would give a child, but since he won't remember, and the parents will, it might actually be perfect. Mothers and fathers will certainly appreciate this gift of time, because often they don't have enough of it. Offer to babysit for a special night out or even an entire weekend if these are very close friends or family members.

And if babysitting doesn't seem very appealing, even offering to cook dinner for the family would be a welcome relief for parents who are about to enter into the terrible twos, and could really use the relief, if only for a few hours!
