Cash for Refrigerators – U.S. Stimulus ProgramNew Energy Star® Appliance Government Rebates Starting in 2009
The U.S. stimulus program, Cash for Refrigerators, or Cash for Appliances, will provide government rebates for new Energy Star® appliance purchases starting in late 2009.
American consumers are going to see another type of government stimulus incentive beginning in Fall 2009. This time, the government will provide rebates to consumers who purchase qualifying Energy Star® home appliances. Cash for RefrigeratorsIn a July 14, 2009 announcement, Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced the State Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program, or Cash for Refrigerators (also commonly referred to as “Cash for Appliances”). Purpose of United States Government Appliance RebatesOne primary goal of the Cash for Refrigerators incentive program is to increase energy efficiency in American homes. According to Secretary Chu, “Appliances consume a huge amount of our electricity, so there’s enormous potential to both save energy and save families money every month. These rebates will help families make the transition to more efficient appliances, making purchases that will directly stimulate the economy.” Cash for Appliances Fact – Government Rebates May Not Be Contingent Upon Trade-InFor the popular Cash for Clunkers program, consumers were required to hand over their clunker vehicle in order to receive a federal government voucher. Under the Cash for Appliances government stimulus incentive program, the federal government doesn't require a trade-in, although states are free to build that requirement into their respective plans. Obama Economic Stimulus – State Energy Efficient Home Appliance Rebate ProgramsCash for Appliances funding will be allocated to states based on population. The formula divides the United States population by each state’s population to arrive at an allocation percentage (i.e. how much each state will receive out of the total $296,000,000 allocated to the program). Note: Both American Samoa and the Northern Marina Islands aren’t subject to the population allocation method; $100,000 has been allocated to both. U.S. Appliance Stimulus Funding & Cash for Refrigerators Rebate Program DetailsFunding for the Cash for Refrigerators program will come from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (also known as the 2009 economic stimulus plan), signed by President Barack Obama on February 17, 2009.
