Video games used to be a male-dominated past time. Now women and girls are also buying the Wii Fit. It's a great way to get in shape; but don't overpay.

Working out with a cartoon character may be hard to get used to for some. But it's certainly a lot cheaper than hiring a personal trainer. And you can exercise at your convenience in the privacy of your own home. Women are buying Wii Fits in droves. The game is in such high demand, it was difficult to find both before and after Christmas. Even now, some online stores are over-charging for this popular game. Don't pay more than $90 anywhere. But even that is a lot of money these days. Can you actually lose weight with a video game?

How to Get in Shape with Wii Fit

  • Try all the exercises at least once. The game is divided into four segments: Strength, yoga, aerobics and balance contests. If all you do are the balance games and a few yoga poses, you probably won't see results. But if you grind your hips and go all out with the hoola hoop, and really put some muscle into those strength exercises, you'll notice the difference. The game comes with a balance platform and can determine to some extent how well you're doing. But you really have to monitor yourself as well.

  • Push yourself with the exercises. You may not feel the support of a group exercise class when you are doing a step workout with a bunch of avatars. But if you give 100% as if a live trainer were pushing you, you'll really feel your muscles working.

  • Pay attention to the goals you set for yourself. You'll be asked to conduct a body test every time, before you start training. Try it at least once a week. The machine will measure your weight and balance. It will give you an indication of how far you need to go to reach your weight and fitness goals. You can even compete with other family members. If you're a "calorie roaster" while your husband is a "couch potato" you have some bragging rights at the dinner table!

  • Get support from others. Either find a group online, blog about your experiences, or at least talk to other people about what you're doing. Trying to lose weight by yourself is tough. But if you get positive reinforcement from the people in your life, the weight will come off faster, and you'll have more fun getting there. The Wii itself can't make you lose weight, but it does provide an easy way to challenge your body and get fit cheaply and easily.
