During the holidays marketers bombard consumers with manipulative ad campaigns designed
to persuade them to spend their money recklessly.
After all, Christmas comes but once a year. But, what about those experiencing financial difficulties? Don't turn into a Holiday Grinch! There are deals and discounts everywhere. Here's the rundown. Pawn Shop DealsPawn shops are not like the shops made famous in many B movies. Pawn shops are a great way to purchase almost new items at deep discounts. One newswoman on a popular morning show reports purchasing a brand new Xbox 360 still in the original box for $200.00 -- less than half its original price. Another one of her great buys was a new Canon Digital Camera for $100. The original price was $199.00. She also found that pawn shops were a great place to purchase expensive diamonds at comparatively low prices. Often for up to half the original price. Consignment Shop DealsThe best way to get a fabulous bargain is to find a consignment shop in an upscale neighborhood. Often, wealthy people attach a stigma to wearing the same designer outfit twice in public and decide to get rid of the item. So the clothes end up in consignment shops. The consignment store owner provides a place to sell the item for a percentage of the sale. Consignment shops are a great place to find designer clothing, jewelry, even furniture far below original prices. Take the time to look around the shop. Check the quality of the merchandise. Is it suitable for purchase? Of exceptional quality? Look for designer items. Are the prices comparable to other stores? Lower or higher? Auction Site BargainsLook for a bargain at one of the many auction sites online. It is relatively easy to find great electronics, clothing, jewelry at bargain prices. eBay is a great site to search for an inexpensive gift. Sign up. Get an ID. And start bidding. Flea Markets/Garage Sales ItemsFrequent local garage sales or flea markets. Many sellers don't realize what a item is really worth and consequently buyers discover marvelous gems selling for less than half their real value. Here's a tip: If you see an interesting item...wait till the end of day and return. If the item has not sold...the odds are the owner will sell it for much less than the original asking price just to clear it out of the way. Thrift ShopsShabby chic or retro style is in fashion...go fab shabby with items purchased at local thrift shops. Everything under the sun is usually available at local thrift shops, which might include antique furniture, jewelry, clothing, household items, pots and pans, electronics. Check any item of interest with care to make sure it is in good condition and works properly. This is especially true for any electrical items purchased. Re-giftingGo through those unused gifts and sort them out. Grab that plaid shirt or knitted sweater and repackage it in a new gift box with pretty ribbons and give again. Tip: Re-gifting is an acceptable practice as long as the re-gifter doesn't return the present to the original giver. Use these tips to spend wisely this holiday season. And learn to spend with thrift in mind and not over your budget.
