Eight inch, foot long or as long as the room you're standing in…sub sandwiches are as varied in size, shape and style as the ingredients they put in them. But finding one that’s suitable for your taste buds as well as your cash situation is another story.
Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches Jimmy John was supposedly a struggling student when he started this fast-growing sandwich empire. The prices are low, ($5 for an eight inch sub) but try to find a microwave in the place. All the sandwiches are cold. If that’s not a problem for you, be sure you sample the #5 Vito. It has genoa salami, provolone, capicola, onion, lettuce, tomato and vinaigrette dressing. If you like tuna, #3 "Totally Tuna" is loaded with lots of tuna and veggies. The tuna is mixed with celery, onions, special sauce, alfalfa sprouts, cucumber, lettuce and tomato. The home-made bread is what draws people here, and the no-frills atmosphere.
Subway This sub giant isn’t only known for its "real-life guy" commercials featuring Jared, Subway’s weight loss mega-star. You can save cash as well as calories here, if you pay attention to the specials. Right now some stores are offering "foot longs" for $5. You can choose between BLT, Meatball Marinara, Cold Cut Combo, Spicy Italian, Veggie Delite, Black Forest Ham, Oven Roasted Chicken Breast and Tuna.

But to get the deal, you must pick one of their "deli favorites." Ham, turkey, roast beef, are among the choices. Makes sure you order a hot sandwich. The bread, meat and cheese go through a long toaster-oven type assembly line face up. After which cold toppings like lettuce and tomato are added. It sort of reminds you of a giant easy-bake oven.
Warehouse clubs If you need sandwiches for a big crowd, check out Sam’s Club or Costco. At Sam’s you can order a order a round sandwich, complete with honey ham, smoked turkey, swiss cheese, lettuce tomoto, onion and a 12-ounce honey dijon mustard dip. It feeds 16 to 18 guests for $19.88. You do need to call at least 24 hours in advance.
Then there’s always good old-fashioned make your own sandwiches at home. Buy fresh bread, meat from the deli-section of your supermarket, and plain-old mustard and relish. But just because you make them yourself, doesn’t mean these sandwiches have to be plain. Find a recipe for creative sandwiches you can prepare in your own kitchen.
