Do laundry for less. Where to find cheap laundry detergent, and ways to save energy while doing your wash.
Granular, liquid, hot or cold water mixes, even organic laundry detergent…with a dizzying array of products on the market, it’s difficult to decide which one is best. The solution is simple…soap is soap, so whichever brand is cheapest, that’s the one you should go with.
Where to Find the Best Deals on Laundry Detergent:
Well, it certainly isn’t the grocery store. Unless you find a great sale, or some incredible coupons, buy your food at the supermarket and save your laundry detergent run for the warehouse clubs and discount stores. You’ll save a lot more. This is one product where it pays to buy in bulk.
Tired of lugging big boxes of laundry soap? Maybe you are driving a small car to save money and don’t have the room to be carting around loads of detergent.
Where to Find Laundry Detergent Deals Online:
CVS Pharmacy The nationwide drug store chain is offering 10% off Gain Concentrated Liquid Detergent. A 50 ounce bottle is priced at $7.64.
Amazon This giant book seller is slowly taking over the online grocery market. They’re offering Tide HE 2 Times Concentrated Liquid Detergent 64 load bottle (pack of 4) for $67.94. Regular price is $77.64. It also ships for free.
Overstock.com Not only does this mega outlet store offer deals on clothes, but also on detergent to wash them with. The big "O" has a 100 pound container of Hurican 40 laundry detergent for $115.99. That’s a 13% savings. You’ll also pay only $2.95 for shipping.
Should You Buy Organic?
Look at the ingredients. Popular brands are getting more and more environmentally friendly and often include the same ingredients as organic brands for a lot less. Look for slogans like "phosphate free" on the label.
How to Save Energy Doing Laundry:
Wash in cold water as much as possible. And whether special "cold water" detergents are any more effective is debatable.
Fill up the washing machine. It sounds simple, but if you don’t fill up your machine to its maximum capacity, you are wasting water and energy. (But be careful not to over-stuff the machine.)
Don’t run the dryer too long. Dry as little as possible. Put your machine on the lowest heat setting and dry your clothes half way. Then hang dry them the rest of the way. You’ll not only save energy, but your clothes will also shrink less!
