Swimsuit season is here! Where to shop for exercise videos and how to determine which is the best one for you.
Whether it’s yoga, strength training or good old fashioned bootcamp that will get you in shape for beach season, you can find it on DVD. And with gym memberships more of a luxury than a necessity, buying an inexpensive video that you can follow in your living room may be the cheapest way to get fit.
Where to Find the Best Deals on Exercise Videos:
Rent a DVD first. Not sure if you are a pilate’s connoisseur or kick boxing aficionado, try them both, but only for a couple days at a time. When you are sure you have found the exercise routine that will tone and sculpt you, then look at purchasing a video. And even if you have found the perfect type of exercise, you also need to find the right "trainer." Granted, you don’t even know the person on the screen chanting commands to you through your TV. But if you can’t follow the moves no matter how many times you press rewind, maybe a different exercise guru should be teaching you your moves.
Check out the library. Make sure you exhaust all the available copies of videos at your local public library before you invest any money. Even if the titles are older, many of the exercises are still current.
Look for videos at discount stores. Overstock.com offers many titles for less than $10. No sense paying a lot more at a fancy sporting goods store. Check for sales and clearances. Some videos aren’t as popular as they once were. So the stores need to get rid of them to make room for the latest exercise fad, or newest trainer to the stars.
Take a class first. If you are not sure which exercise video is right for you, try some different group fitness classes at your local community center. You might find you enjoy the camaraderie of a class better than standing on your living room floor by yourself. Each class is often $10 or less, and for the money you’ll have an instructor who can tell you what you’re doing wrong.
Search for used videos. E-bay and Amazon Marketplace are chock full of pre-owned DVDs. Just remember, the cost of shipping could exceed the price of the video! You might even find some popular titles at garage sales and thrift stores. Time to grab those Jane Fonda and Richard Simmons tapes from the 80s and exercise to the oldies! They're even available on DVD.
