Shopping for an elliptical cross trainer for your home workout room? Know what you're buying and how to get the best price.

Elliptical cross trainers are gentle on your joints, provide a great cardio workout, and may be easy on your wallet, if you know where to look.

Ellipticals under $1,000

You won’t find gym-quality equipment in this price range. These may lack the sturdiness you would notice at a commercial health club. But what they lacks in ruggedness, they make up for in compactness.

  • Reebok RL1500 Sports Authority has it on sale for $999 including free shipping. This machine boasts a 20-inch stride length and aluminum glide track with reverse motion. You can monitor your progess on a 6-window LED dsiplay. Fifteen workout programs are offered. You won’t get a huge incline on this model.
  • Cory Everson 5011 ET $169 plus shipping through Sports Authority. This is very light weight and compact. You’ll have some tension control but no incline.
  • Nordic Track Audio Strider 990 Nordic Track offers this model for $999 plus tax and shipping. You can plug your mp3 player right into the machine. It features a motorized power ramp and automatic power resistance. And you can fold it up for storage.

Ellipticals above $1,100

  • Precor EFX 544 Treadmills Central offers a re-manufactured EFX 544 for $1925 plus tax and shipping. The regular price for a new model is $4,295. Precor is the cadillac of ellipticals. They offer durability, resistance, as well as manual and programmed courses to simulate a hill, valley, interval training and ramp changes. Remanufactured models are often a great deal. But make sure you understand return policies and warranty information (if any) before you buy. And find a qualified repair person in your area before you hit "place order."
  • Life Fitness 95Hrxi Fitness Blowout offers this remanufactured model for $3897. A new unit runs over $6,000. They advertise an even lower price with coupon code 331291. Call 800-348-4537. The 95 Hrxi offers 25 levels of resistance, a stride length of 20 inches, and a customized cool-down.

How do you know if you want to spend a lot or a little on your elliptical? Ask yourself these questions:

  • How much time will I spend each week on the elliptical? If you’re planning to work out everyday for 40 minutes or more, get the more durable health-club quality machine. If you already go to a workout facility and this is just for days when you can’t make it to the gym, a lighter, less expensive model might work fine.
  • Is space a problem? The heavier more rugged ellipticals take up a lot more space than you might realize. Get the dimensions and then measure your room. Some, like the Nordic Track, fold up easily so you can store it in a closet.

Before you buy online, try out the exact model you're interested in, either at a store or a health club.
