You love your curls but hate spending money to keep them looking perfectly coifed....A look at the best inexpensive products for curly hair.

If you are blessed (or cursed) with naturally curly hair, you probably have a love-hate relationship with your tresses. Maybe you spent the 70s ironing those locks flat, or subjected yourself to expensive salon straightening treatments in the 80s. The 90s brought along a return to curly styles. And now, anything goes. With an abundance of styling products to choose from which do you buy?

Best Curl Enhancing Products for the Money:

  • DevaCurl by AnGell 12 ounces $16.95 A little goes a long way with this thick gel. Use only a small dollop after you shampoo, about the size of a nickel. If you use too much, your hair will get heavy and sticky. The bottle lasts a long time. If your hair tends to frizz especially in humid weather, you’ll need to apply a pomade to your tresses once they’re dry to separate the strands.
  • Round Trip by Paul Mitchell 6.8 ounces $11.95 If you’re used to gels or cream based curl enhancers, this will surprise you. It comes in liquid form. So you need to shake well before applying and pour about a quarter-size amount into your palm and work through your hair from root to tips. This is a lightweight product that does keep frizz under control.
  • Curl Defining Crème by Biolage/Matrix 8.5 ounces $14.50 This is a cream based product and great for women whose curls are a little too bouncy or flyaway. Everyone else, beware…it might weigh your curls down.
  • Ringlet 07 Curl Perfector by Redken 6 ounces $13.00 This product is sort of a combination of Round Trip by Paul Mitchell and Biolage’s Curl Defining Crème. It’s not quite as light as round Trip but it doesn’t weight your hair down as much as Curl Defining Crème. It gives you enough hold along with a little bit of body.

Managing Curly Hair

Whatever you do, don’t over blow dry. Only use a hair dryer to add some lift. Bend over when your hair is wet and dry on the diffuser setting for only two minutes. Then comb out your tresses, scrunch those curls, and air-dry the rest of the way.

If you wash your hair everyday use a moisturizing shampoo and try a conditioner for damaged or colored hair. It adds moisture and lessens frizz. If you have any experience with curls at all, you know frizzy hair is a constant battle. But at least now you can help combat the problem with some inexpensive products.
