Slumping 2008 retail sales are prompting many U.S. retailers to slash prices at year end. Here are some popular after Christmas sales for the last week of December 2008. Up to 75% Off: Stein Mart and Macy’s after Christmas SalesStein Mart Red Dot Clearance Event – Customers can find savings of 40-75% off already discounted prices. In some areas, the Christmas day paper includes a coupon for an additional 25% off all red dot and clearance merchandise valid only on December 26th and 27th. Macy’s – This post-holiday sale include 75% off designer clothing from the following brands: Alfani, Nine West, Charter Club, Rafaella, JM Collection, Alfred Dunner, AGB, and Style&co. Winter coats, sleepwear, jewelry, shoes, and robes are also highly discounted. Fitness-related after Christmas Sales: Sears and Dick’s Sporting GoodsSears – Get deals on Christmas decorations, décor, and gift wrap, lingerie, tires, tools, and appliances. This sale is punctuated by a fitness equipment sale with the slogan “If it’s fitness, it’s on sale.” Dicks Sporting Goods “No More Excuses Fitness Sale” – This retailer is offering 50-60% off and buy one get one free deals on sporting equipment and clothing. Find table games, basketball goals, hiking boots, golf clubs, tennis shoes, and guns on sale. Advertised sales also include treadmills, ellipticals, and home gyms. 12 Months No Interest Credit Card Promotions: hhgregg and The Home Depothhgregg – This is a unique sale where almost everything $99 and up is 20% off. This store is currently advertising 12 months at zero interest in some markets. The combined discounts and no interest promotions may make this an ideal time to buy a flat screen television, large appliance, or GPS unit. The Home Depot Winter Storage Event – Special buys are available on storage containers, garage totes, floor drawer units, and tiered shelving. In addition to storage, The Home Depot is offering a “buy now, pay later” deal. The ad prompts customers to buy appliances of $299 or more for 10% off with free delivery and haul away services, then place that purchase on a store credit card with no interest and payments for 12 months. This might be a good deal for someone already in the market for a large appliance. Other after Christmas Sales: Toys-R-Us, Bed Bath & Beyond, Walmart Online DealsToys-R-Us Super Deal Days Big Year-End Sale – Find buy one get one free or half off promotions and 50% off deals on DVDs, video games, LeapFrog cartridges, and Vtech Smartridges. Bigger discounts are available on car race tracks, ping pong tables, and baby bedding. Bed Bath & Beyond – The advertisement mentions half off Christmas merchandise including décor, table linens, and gift wrap. Walmart – This retail giant always has excellent in-store after Christmas sales, but the online deal selection is worth mentioning in 2008. The Walmart website prominently displays over 4,000 clearance items on Christmas day; most are available both in store and online. Items appear to be in all categories, from fitness or apparel to jewelry, toys, and electronics. Don’t Get Carried away with after Christmas Sales: Spend Money WiselyNot sure if a year end sale is really the best deal of the season? Try shopping around for the best deals and adopting frugal shopper spending habits to stay on track financially for the new year. Also consider looking for online coupon codes before going to the store; better discounts might be available online than in person.
